Honors Assassins Game

Assassins will be starting on Thursday, October 27 at 0800. Rules are as follows: you must shoot from outside of a building or car at your target who is also outside of a building or car any time any day. If you kill your target, their target becomes your target. Nerf guns only. Report all kills to me. My cell number is 417-434-3242 just leave a message if I do not answer. Remember the game does not begin until Thursday at 8. I will keep track of the kills and who is left in the game. Have fun and good luck. Patrick Beckett's Band Snares Two Grammy Nominations!

As we've noted here last week, freshman Honors Student Patrick Beckett has a band called MACON that has been making quite a name for itself locally.

Well now it looks like MACON could be getting a lot more national attention. Patrick has a post on his blog about it. Here's the press release:

The National Academy of Arts and Sciences has placed MACON on the official ballot for the 2006 Grammy Awards. Macon is in 2 different catagories. Best Performace By a Rock Group or Duo with the song "If I Could"and Best Rock Song with the song "Sex."

Caleb Gallemore Has Published a Scholarly Essay

The MSSU Honors Program is delighted to announce that Senior Honors student Caleb Gallemore will publish a scholarly essay in the journal Milennium, as part of the F.S. Northedge Essay competition for 2005.

Caleb's essay, entitled "Of Lords and (Cyber)Serfs: eGovernment and Poststructuralism in a Neomedieval Europe," was originally written during his international study at the University of Plymouth in the UK, but extensively revised by Caleb over the past year.

The abstract for Caleb's essay goes a little something like this:

The decentralisation and despatialisation of governmental architectures within the European Union (EU) that will result from the development of eGovernment under the Lisbon Strategy could have a crucial impact on political structures and identity in Europe. eGovernment projects at the European and Member State levels are professed to expand citizens' access to political institutions, increase social inclusion and enhance the efficiency of pan-European government. This essay examines the possible implications of long-term digitalisation of government in the EU given the current trajectory of eGovernment discourse and its place within the broader Information Society goals. It argues that eGovernment will reconfigure several political relationships within the EU, fostering the development of a neomedieval polity similar to that first described by Hedley Bull, where government is multi-layered and overlapping and mobility among certain individuals is very
high. To make the neomedieval perspective more appropriate for this digital analysis, the essay draws upon postructuralist ideas concerning political forms and the construction of knowledge and subjectivity.

Hello!

My name is *Ms. X*. I live in Joplin and I am considering going to school at MSSU. I am going to apply to the Honors Program, so I was interested in asking an Honors student what they thought about it. I really want to know what there is to do on campus. Im kindof looking for a big university atmosphere with alot of student involvement and school spirit. Are there fun things to do on campus? How easy is it to meet people? I am worried that I will be bored becuase I have lived in Joplin all of my life, but I think the college lifestyle will offer alot of different (and fun!) things to keep me busy. Also, I would like to know your take on the residence halls. The dorm atmosphere is what I am looking forward to the most!

Your Input on New Policy Proposal for Incoming Honors Freshmen

Honors and the Student Support Center are considering combining two events that incoming honors freshmen experience before classes start: the Signing Ceremony and Fresh Start.

Try to remember those two events and your attitudes and feelings about those days. What are your opinions about putting the two events together in one day? We would do the Signing as usual in the morning, and then go into the Fresh Start activities through lunch and then enroll about 2:00 in the afternoon. Here's what the proposed schedule would look like:

11:00 - Honors Meeting with new Students - Blogs, etc.

12:00 - Lunch with Academic Faculty and Deans

1:00 - Panel Discussions - Student Services -etc

1:45 - Academic Dean Session

2:00 - Enrollment

Freshman Honors student Patrick Beckett has a band called Macon that will be playing at some local venues this weekend.

Check them out at Dioko's coffeehouse (514 S. Main St. in downtown Joplin) on Friday, October 14th ($3 cover), and The Bridge in Joplin on Saturday, October 15th at 7 pm.

All current Honors students may register Friday November 4, 2005 in the Honors Office, according to the following sequence. Students may register any time after their scheduled sequence but NOT BEFORE.

EMS Meeting -- Tuesday October 11th

EMS (short for Epsilon Mu Sigma) is a social organization for Honors students dedicated to community service, intellectual growth, and fun for all.

There will be an EMS meeting tomorrow October 11 at 12:15 in room 306 in Webster Hall.

"We will be planning the upcoming movie night and discussing t-shirt designs and other event possibilities, such as a game of assassins," says Katie Hargrove, current EMS President.

A Wedding in the Honors Family

Honors Assistant Director Jeff Martinek married Kathy on October 1st, 2005. This picture was taken beside Lake Erie. As you can see, it was a sunny and cloudless day----hopefully a harbinger of things to come!
